WIP Wednesday: Tablehammer's Got something in the Works

Work in Progress Wednesday

I'm very excited to invite Josef, the founder of Tablehammer.com, and a Tau community celebrity, El_Mutanto!

The interpretation of the lore and the creation of new models is a keystone of the hobby and one that Tau players have always taken a lot of joy in.

One of my personal favorites from Eastern-Empire

As technology advances there are new methods and new opportunities for hobbyists to take what's in the lore or their imaginations and share it with the rest of us.

One such resource is Tablehammer, a site run and founded by Josef, who has taken some time out of his day to sit with us at NewsCaste.

WIP Wednesday 3/22/23 (Only Saturday because... Calmsword forgot)

Work in Progress Wednesday

Hi, my name is Logan, you may recognize me by my discord handle Redrix-3. Today is another redo of an older project. A Pipermakes print I used as a Coldstar proxy, here it is before a new coat of paint.

Paints used

The first thing I needed to fix was the large flight rod sticking out of the back of the base. While decently sturdy, it is connected to the model only with glue and I wanted something to definitely lock it into place. I grabbed a paper clip, drilled out the holes and repositioned the model. I also zenithal highlighted the whole model to really define out the shades and highlights

Next up was picking out all of the mechanical bits with my classic Lamp Black for a nice matte finish, as well as some Skullcrusher Brass to pick out the gyroscope greebleys.

Now certain armour panels get basecoated with Lamp Black then a layer of Dawnstone.

And I may have gone a bit far ahead with my base coats of Pro Acryl Blue then Green Turqoise, but this is where I ended up after my painting session for today!

The highlights with the green turquoise came out extremely well and I’m excited to continue with the project! I’d say I’m about 60% done, and now is just a lot of detail work and clean up.

Until next week,

The Battledome: Free State GT 2023

Welcome to The Battledome!

The Tau Fire Caste study the ways of war in the vast complexes known as Battledomes. These serve as arenas for the combat trials of Tau warriors and are used to test the skills and combat abilities of Tau warriors. The Tau use the Battledomes to train their warriors in the art of combat and to hone their skills in various forms of combat often crafted by instructors to represent specific and upcoming war zones.

The Tau are a highly advanced alien race with advanced technology and a deep understanding of science and engineering. Their Battledomes are no exception, featuring advanced simulations and holographic environments that can replicate any type of terrain or combat situation. These environments allow Tau warriors to practice and prepare for any type of combat scenario they may face in the field.

Arks: More Farsight

More from the Warhammer Community

With Adepticon around the corner we should expect more details coming out of the Farsight book and all things 40k but yesterday we got some snippets from the community site

A new voice for the youtube video named "Alex" (careful, no last names these days lest we get attached to anyone that makes GW official content) and... makes some bold declarations.

The Arks of Omen book featuring Farsight is going to take place on... Arthas Moloch?

Arthas Moloch is a relic world just along the border of the Vior'la and Sa'cea Sept borders on the Tau side of the Damocles Gulf.

Farsight has returned to the Commonwealth's Spheres only once, during the attack by Warboss Grog in a maskirovka that drew Farsight away from his Enclaves and left them open for assault.

If there hasn't been a stellargraphic error, that would mean that this war going on is within proximity to the cursed planet.

Alex states that on the verge of the Farsight victory over the Orks an Arks of Omen shows up turning the war into a three way battle:

Vashtorr the Arkifane’s quest for the Key-fragments is nearing its end, and the action turns to the dead world of Arthas Moloch in the fourth chapter in the epic narrative series, Arks of Omen: Farsight. Commander Farsight is just preparing to wrap up the vicious War of Dakka once and for all, when calamity strikes and his entire operation is jeopardised by the arrival of the Unhallowed space hulk and its Balefleet entourage.

The article goes on to say that the book will advance the narrative of Warhammer 40,000 along with rule additions for Boarding Actions.

We also will be getting the general release of Shadowsun: The Patient Hunter which we will be unleashing a scathing review on in the coming week.

Auxiliaries and the Genius of Hobbyists

 The Dream of Coalition

Since the first codex in the early 2000's the Tau were described as leading a diverse coalition of alien and even human factions under the banner of the Greater Good. Now, whether they were coerced, brainwashed, convinced or contracted, was irrelevant to the fact that the Tau were only one piece of what was hopefully going to be a pretty unique puzzle.

We're 20+ years later and we have two auxiliaries (Kroot and Vespid) despite having, well, this many:

The Galg are multi-limbed tentacled creatures from the planet Adummin. Young Galg oil is used as a hallucinogenic.

The Tarellians: Saurian aliens who's home worlds were destroyed by the Imperium.

The Greet: are an invertebrate species from the Ocean World of Isla'su. Aquatic, they contribute to the Greater Good with advanced hydroponic farms and aquaculture. Known to have vessels called Lineships and Stealthers.

The Ji'atrix : are ethereal aliens skilled in void-faring.

The Morralian: little is known other than they deploy 'Deathsworn' who fight with the Tau. Morralian young's skin are used as luxury robes by the Drukhari.

The Ranghon: little is known other than they deploy 'Battleborn' who fight with the Tau.

The Anthrazods: are a sturdy but dim-witted race used by the Tau for asteroid mining. When directed by the Demiurg or Earth Caste, the Anthrazods can build city substructures and transport tunnels like no one else.

The Brachyura: are a small race unparalleled in the construction of Earth Caste Plasma Generators. They resemble the tiny crabs of Terra. They possess a fierce technical intelligence. They help the Earth Caste in construction and manufacturing on the micro and macro level. Using tiny tools, the Brachyuran excel at delicate construction like creating and engineering the circuitry and small mechanisms of Tau suits and systems which results in more refined and finely tuned technology.

Boaburi: aided in the rebuilding of Dal'yth.

Charpactin: sentient fungal growths that joined the Tau recently. Their ability to subdue and calm individuals is unparalleled, able to counter even the effects of Nurgle's taint on plague zombies and return consciousness to these individuals.

Demiurg: we now know them as "Kin". The Thurm and Sry'tok brotherhood have trade agreements with the Tau and are responsible for trading ion technology to the Tau several thousand years ago.

Domati: they deploy "Wyrmships" to support Tau fleet actions.

Formosians: joined the Tau in 896.m40 through the diplomacy of the Golden Ambassador.

G'nosh: known for cargo hauling.

Hrenian: deploy "light infantry" in Tau actions.

Jagordians: they created the "scepter of unity" for Aun'Wei

M'uh'ja: assisted in rebuilding Dal'yth after the Damocles Gulf Crusade.

N’deemi: intelligence experts.

Phosiab: can see in 9 dimensions.

Nagi: also known as Mindworms. They live in colonies and act as advisors, notably to Ethereals and high ranking officials.

Thraxians: chitin covered and multi-armed and known for close combat. Joined in the 1st Sphere.

Vorgh: giants, simple but can be driven to anger

Nicassar: the first race to join the Tau. Incredible telekinetics described both as ursine and birdlike. Operate in Lifefleets and Dhows and are used to scout ahead of Tau fleet actions.

Yabi-Yabi: a space bound race.

Pohu-Agg: an extremely aggressive species.

Ostense Council: a mercenary entity

Phoroki: unknown

Nin'aenh: notably defeated by the Tau and forced to compliance.

Strousii: known for their use of Neural weapons.

Ulumeathic: trade parters, single world left after empire destroyed by Gorgon

But the human imagination thrives on possibility and today we'd like to share with you some notable aliens that have come up through the years both officially and otherwise so that it might inspire you and your bitz box to make something cool.

To begin with, we have the original Gue'vesa (Human Helpers) made by Andy Hoare. You'll have to hunt the internet for some examples since GW has taken it off their website and take a trip in the WayBack Machine.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080420071331/http://uk.games-workshop.com/tau/tau-auxiliaries/

Eastern Empire: Started by the legendary Tael who also began Advanced Tau Tactica, an excellent source of Tau fandom. Tael is responsible for at least one of this alien species being showcased in Australian White Dwarf (and thus "soft" canon... but canon nonetheless)

Naga: a reptilian species technologically uplifted by the Tau.

WIP Wednesday 3/15/23

Work in Progress Wednesday

Hi, my name is Logan, you may recognize me by my discord handle Redrix-3. Today I'll be sharing the progress I have made on a project I "finished" over a year ago, but I have decided to revisit.

The initial idea was based off of a classic TY7 Devilfish image:

And here is the progress it had been left in after I stopped working on it:

Not too bad, but compared to my more recent painting projects I felt as if it didn't live up to the standards. Luckily as I had already started to do more airbrush work when I did the white coat I was content with that. The main issues I had were with all of the other colors present on the vehicle, as well as that the side door and Fire Warrior jumping out kept breaking off.

Paints used

Yes those are craft paints. They're way cheaper than anything else on the market and the American Lamp Black has the best coverage of any paint I have ever use. It thins down amazingly and that huge bottle was only like 3 bucks. Same thing with the Liquitex Titanium White.

Back to the models, my first steps were to get the door pinned into place, and fix the ankles of the FW as they had a little greenstuff work.

He's just saying hello!

So he got a new coat of paint to touch up his armor panels and actually give him a leather belt. Also as I was going to change the direction the model would be lit from for highlights, I adjust the brightest spots on his chest and legs. Unfortunately his antenna is still missing, but that is an easy fix for another time. WIP of course!

Next up was revamping the front window, here is me selecting the entry point for the light:

Little bit of specular (I believe that's the term) highlight and it is looking much better! I know a lot of fancy painters will do wet blending for something like this, but I can never get it to look right so I instead just mix a bunch of in-between colors for each step and use that to soften the borders between each color.

Now moving onto the blue armor plates, I wanted to make them more in line with the jade green of Bork'an. So with the green turquoise and a shade I had made using Pro-Acryl Blue, Green Turquoise, and Lamp Black, I blocked out the sections and colored them in! I also filled in the drone ports with lamp black to help distinguish them from the rest of the chassis.

At this point I did get a little distracted and did not come back to the front blue panel until the very end, so we will come back to that.

No more sloppy freehand!

Throughout the project I also added more and more extremely thin white layers to cover up some freehand I was unhappy with.

Now I moved onto the back of the chassis, which had absolutely zero paint besides the base coat. I picked out the back hatch and lit up the "brake" lights with a big glob of Tesseract Glow. It really made them pop out from the black of the inlay. I also did some light dry brushing on those X's on each side, as well as the front portions of the engines and the top technical panels. There was an attempt to place a Tau symbol in the center of the door, but either I have a skill issue or the transfers were just too old and they did not want to stick at all. So I just dropped that idea and moved on.

Now back to the front of the chassis, I finally went back to the blue panel as well as the grey panels. They got the same treatment with shades and highlights to match.

I used to use craft paints for the grey as well, but I ran out and could never find a color match to what I had. Funnily enough the Citadel versions cover just about as well as them (Not great). I am unsure as to what specifically makes those lighter greys cover so poorly but it seems it is not just the cheap paints either.

With all of those panels done, this project is sitting at about 90% done. I still have the drones to clean up, greebles to paint, and small details to touch up. Each door has a window, and the back one has two of course. The Tau sitting in the top hatch is also sitting off to the side as I still have touch ups to do there. For now though, it is definitely more than up to par with my other projects and is ready for the Free State GT this weekend!

(Before)

(After)

Also while I will probably not do much painting on the inside, I'm sure you noticed the red glow.

That my friends is a nano LED, and I have the switch conveniently placed on the bottom.

It almost looks like a greeble!

It helps really add some spice to the project. I bought them from Evan Designs and you can find them here. We're not sponsored, they're just really amazing products.

He's more than ready to serve.

I still have a lot to touch up with this project, so hopefully soon I can present the final project!

Games: Aun'Shi hits Tacticus

Tacticus is a growing App game that depicts the various factions of Warhammer 40,000 fighting each other in various campaigns. I myself have not played this game, however it offers a few tidbits flavor text that's worth knowing.

There have been a few characters but it's always great to see Aun'Shi. For those of you who recall, Aun'Shi was sent out on a mission to ascertain what exactly is going out in the region of space that Farsight disappeared into.

There were also rumors that of all the Ethereals, Aun'Shi is the only one welcome in the Enclaves and that it was his combat style that Farsight initially emulated. Yet, he seems to have disappeared despite being an available character in our codexes through the years.

Many more believe him still a prisoner in Commoragh.

He's shown up in unusual places like the Traxis Sector in the Fantasy Flight card game "Warhammer 40,000: Conquest" (an excellent game if you can still find it).

(always packing extra mus'cles)

Whatever the case may be you can now play him as one of the four characters in the Tacticus game such as:

Shas'La Vior'la Sho'Syl: Firesight Marksman

Who holds the markerlight/drone controller in a unique "shoulder launcher" stance much more mobile looking then the setup style the model has.

Shas'Vre Vior'la Re'vas: Crisis Pilot

Literally brimming with extra equipment, armor and weapons.

Shas'El T'au Darkstrider

Who looks mad, right? Like really pissed... I wanna hug him.

The Dripfeed Continues: Farsight

Onward and Upward?

One of the things that a lot of Tau players worry about is the inconsistencies born out of the Farsight books by Phil Kelly and how they contradict elements of that author's own work (like Vash'Ya) and what other Black Library authors have already written (especially about Shadowsun).

There's no doubt that a LOT of people who like Tau like it because of the initial draw of these books and the mercurial aspects of one Commander Farsight and his giant soul devouring Dawnblade. So, whenever a new tidbit of information comes out the Tau community collectively holds its breath.

Dare I say... I'm hopeful this time around?

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/03/07/ethereals-hate-him-this-tau-commander-discovered-one-weird-trick-to-becoming-a-legend/

Earlier today the Warcom article was released with the same hammy, chummy, tone it's known for and a few ridiculous errors that may or may not allude to a retcon or reimagining of existing lore.

The following was summarized by This.is.Panda on the Tau 40.000 Discord with italicized texts from the Warcom article itself.

Highlights:

1. Here he was attacked by mysterious red-skinned aliens never before seen by the Empire.

Confirmed Etherals didnt know about Chaos before?

2. The experience left Farsight more than a little rattled. Now aware of the existence of Chaos, amongst the galaxy’s other unpleasant secrets, he came to see the Ethereals’ guidance as something far more sinister – control.

Farsight specifically is mad of Etheral absolute control over Tau, instead of Phil Kelly's lore that they were hiding Chaos?

3. Unwilling to follow any longer, but knowing that his fresh new outlook wouldn’t wash with the wider Empire, he took his Dawn Blade into self-imposed exile in his new Farsight Enclaves.

Phil Kelly said Farsight exiled himself because of a Khorne vision of him destroying the Tau Empire. Is this a retcon?

4. Despite this, Farsight returned during the Fifth Sphere Expansion to help his old classmate Shadowsun kick the Imperium out of Mu’gulath Bay – the apparent death of Aun’va no doubt giving him a chuckle.

Fifth Sphere?

5. The Ethereal Supreme has since been replaced by an AI hologram, as it was felt the T’au Empire wouldn’t survive his passing. Quite an achievement, given it lasted millennia before he showed up…

GW acknowledging Aun'Va AI is stupid?

6. So when one of Vashtorr’s Arks of Omen shows up to throw an almighty spanner in the works, Farsight might just feel the tug of the Blood God once more…

First time was with Khorne vision, GW going with chaos corruption again? Does that mean Phil Kelly lores are still canon?

As a reminder, the Warcom and community teams adopt the more carefree language to make the grimdarkness a little more palatable but, to many in the community, we regard everything they say as canon.

That's never a good idea, especially when you start talking about Xenos.

When the Leagues of Votann came out it was mentioned by the Warcom team that "Demiurg" was the Tau name for the Kin. It was quickly circulated throughout the internet and older, longer toothed, enthusiasts collectively pulled their beards and recalled that even Alpharius, ten thousand years ago, was calling the Demiurg by the same name. Indeed, a check at the Lexicon would show the Tau'sian word for the Demiurg is "Bentu'sin" (lit: wise, gifted people).

So, what is This.is.panda commenting on?

Well, it would seem that we're potentially moving away from the mustache twirling Ethereals who, in Kelly's books, had full knowledge of Chaos before the first contact event at Arthas Moloch and more of an ambiguous "shady" version of the ruling Caste.

It would also appear that we may be returning toward the more neutral reasoning that Farsight left the Spheres. Rather than expressly because the Ethereals knew about Chaos but also because the Ethereal's control over Tau society was too much. This would be closer to the Andy Chambers version of Farsight who implied that it had to do with Farsight's belief that a more brutal approach to the enemies of the Castes was the only way to survive in the Galaxy:

Each must find their own way. If those in our heartland had witnessed the savageries of the void as have we they would know this. The hand of each of the starfarers is turned against the other; none will join their strength together just to see their ancient enemies prosper. Neither should we.

~Farsight

Leaving it ambiguous or allowing players to supply their own reasoning for why Farsight left would be better for the hobby rather than offering rare specificity in a Warhammer 40k event. For me, Farsight will always be the "Colonel Kurtz" style commander who felt like command was holding him back from properly serving his people's needs by waging war in a more brutal way.
If you'd like to listen on the subject, take a look here.

For those of us desperate for any Tau details in the upcoming release, these generalized statements offer a bit of hope that the more extreme aspects of Kelly's work will be quietly shuffled to exist within their own volumes rather than spill out into the canonicity affirming pages of a codex/rulebook.

The fact that they got the 3rd Sphere battle for Agrellan/Mu'gulath Bay wrong and placed it in the 5th Sphere is just lazy researching and we can hope it's not indicative of other shortcomings in the summary.

I would be remiss to not mention that a few... disturbed... individuals are hoping for this.

Commander Farsight Spotted!

"For so long we have fought to cleanse the Be'gel menace from our worlds. Together we have become the wave that washes away their filth. The stone on which they break. Together, at last, we hold the chance for final victory in our grasp."

Att: Commander Farsight

What we know so far is that Farsight and the Enclaves that bear his name will face disaster during the "War of Dakka."

Described as piloting a new "bleeding edge" Xv-86 Supernova battlesuit (not to be confused with the original Coldstar Xv-86 battlesuit) courtesy of Fio'O Vesa of the Eight. Designed for command, this XV-86 is upgraded with enhanced command and control suites guided by an on-board artificial intelligence who bears the same name of Supernova.

Previously thought concluded in the greater Tau Commonwealth after the awakening of Shadowsun, it appears that the War of Dakka has continued unabated in the Enclaves against the Ork warlord Nazdreg of the Bad Moons.

We'll keep you up to date in the Arks of Omen book "Farsight" slated for later this year!

Some speculation on this writer's part:

We might be looking at a piece of Blackstone, potentially a talisman which appeared in the short-lived Enclave Codex. These devices protect the user of psyker influence and attack, a powerful ward that Farsight seemed to have recovered from Arthas Moloch, the world where his three Ethereals were assassinated during his reclamation.

And... of course... it could always mean the most unlikely pairing ever conceived in warhammer 40,000:

The Dawnblade is looking pretty beat up too with additional scratches and four unusual marks in the fuller of the blade.
