Our second "Fist of Mont'ka" annual painting competition has finished. We had over a dozen entrants, but only 8 finished their projects on time. A wonderful showing from everyone and we're extremely excited for future competitions.
In no specific order here are the Honorable Mentions. The Imgur Albums will be accessible by clicking the image for each entry:
ASFCheesecake: "Sub-Commander Torchstar"
Judges Comments:
Nick: Cool theme and pose, additional bits are great, nice to see a variety of weathering techniques!Suggestions: improved painting cleanliness (even with weathering), improved model cleanliness (mold lines, sand nubbins, etc.), clean black line around the base.
Redrix: I do really like the weathering, but the engines feel kind of slapped on the top. Details on the face of the pilot kind of mush together, probably could have used a bright eye colour to help contrast.
J0kk3rr: "Tau Droneport"
Judges Comments:
Nick: Great display! Love the overall vibe, fire warriors look like they belong in the scene, good use of overall and detail color. I like the base too.
Suggestions: priming seems to be “dusty” (lots of little specks that distract from the paint job), a little extra painting cleanliness could bring this to the next level.
Redrix: Definitely try to be more careful with the primer, there was a decent amount of speckling on the fire warriors. Other than that it's a really slick diorama.

Nick: Love the Ork freehand and base in general, great work on the gems/lens, nice clean red and masking work
Suggestions: Would love to see more contrast and edge highlighting, the plasma gun looks unpainted, I like the attempts at volumetric/edge highlighting the metal but would like to see that contrast increased!
Redrix: The TMM shading on the arms is really clean, and I love the gradient on the stenciled markings. The lenses are excellently done. However the plasma does look unfinished and could use an extra highlight panel or two. Other than that really nice piece
The_original_Dr_C: "Greater Knarloc"
Judges Comments:
Nick: Super cool diorama, love the creativity and conversions to make it happen!
Suggestions: Some easy wins would be more contrast, edge highlights, and some extra tufts and details on the base.
Redrix: The posing and kitbashing are amazing. Love how dynamic it is. I do wish there was more contrast on the Kroot, such as more muscle definition and eyes being painted. However, still an amazing piece
Goomba1701: "Tau Tidewall Shieldline and Defence Platform"
Judges Comments:
Nick: Good start, love where you are going with the freehand, excited to see it finished!
Redrix: I really love the little cherry blossom, the little bits of yellow really pop as well!
Third Place: Unfathomable_Entity
Judges Comments:
Nick: Good attention to detail with painting and highlights, I like the rusty weathering and scratches, generally a clean paint job!
Suggestions: Everything could use a bit more contrast (an extra layer or two, edge highlights, slightly darker shadows), the mold seam on the model’s right shoulder is distracting, would love to see the eyes painted.
Redrix: Huge attention to detail, the wood grain on the stock is nice, and the rust on the gun is spectacular. Definitely needs the eyes painted though. A red would really make them pop.

Judges Comments: Nick: Really cool model! Great use of other kits and decals, awesome pose, great weathering and camo.
Suggestions: Improved painting cleanliness (specifically the OSL glows, the TMM parts), the plasma guns seem unpainted, everything would benefit from edge highlights. Redrix: Always love to see your conversions for various models. Great posing and camo, though the plasma could use a little more colour, they do look unpainted.

First Place: Rossalot
Judges Comments:
Nick: Wonderful work! Really impressed with the freehand, edge highlighting/panel lining, painted weathering, lens. Cool base!
Suggestions: The OSL on the base could use some work (I don’t think the dry brush sells it), some extra color variation in the blue base coat would really take it to the next level.
Redrix: Chef's kiss mwah
The weathering looks like actual pieces are missing in various places, the spirals are crisp and clean, the basing is very nice. I do wish that it didn't look like it was sitting on top of the barrel but I understand why you positioned it so.
